An open letter to all the police.

If its 'essential intelligence' for the police to record the political opinions of women, it must be equally essential to investigate the targeted threats against women made by men.

On 8th August 2022 I was told that my photograph attached to a google map to my precise home address had been published to Twitter by the account @TerfInvader, as part of a ‘Terf Directory’, along with similar details for 3 other women and one man.

Later that day I reported this to Wiltshire police, who are taking it seriously because this is not the first time this has happened to me. In 2019 a man pleaded guilty to a criminal offence after publishing my photograph, home address, email and telephone number alongside a variety of insults on his website.

I am very glad Wiltshire are taking it seriously. Because this is, after all the force that unlawfully recorded me for over 2 years as ‘a barrister posting hate’ for tweets such as ‘my dog will call me a Nazi for cheese’ and which sent two officers round to Kellie-Jay Keen’s house after someone was offended by one of her videos - where she certainly didn’t announce anyone’s private address but spoke in general terms of her distaste for various paraphilias.

The account @TerfInvader was eventually suspended by Twitter after about 12 hours and hundreds of reports. Of course, it simply set up shop with another account and another blog post. Here’s an example

They screamed at my daddy told him they was going to getting him banned and that they did they snitched to the feds to try and silence daddy but daddy is smarter

Big Shout Out To all trans people everywhere my daddy and I won't stand back and watch while they taunt, harass and intimidate us while they bully and alienate us

The police are quick to haqrass us yet never do anything about the abuse we face from the GC Crowd

This account is continuing to publish details that will lead to the location of women it deems ‘terfs’. And of course it has the ubiquitous response to women who have the temerity to wish to speak about their lives and experiences as the female sex

I appreciate it is going to be difficult to identify this individual but given that I am told it is essential for operational reasons for the police to record the opinions of women if they are offensive to men, I hope similar attention will be given to recording these targeted threats against individual women. In the event we are physically assaulted in or near our homes, there will be some intelligence as to motive. 

I remain perplexed as to why this even has to be said: getting upset about something you see on line that is not directed at you as an individual IS NOT THE SAME THING as finding your photograph and address have been published in an incitement to others to harm you. It remains a matter of serious concern that various police forces appear to prioritise the need for men not to feel offended by the expression of protected political speech, against the right of women to privacy and safety. The former should only be of police concern in vanishingly rare circumstances - the latter however should be hard baked into the operational responses of every single police force.

I am grateful for the assistance Wiltshire gave me in 2019 and am grateful that they have taken this seriously in 2022. But the time has come to stop empowering these men who think they can rule by fear and intimidation. Women have a right to speak. Targeted harassment of those women who do speak, is a crime and must be treated as such.
