I was going to flag the typos - I didn’t know whether it was important to be absolutely spot on in such an important document, but it seems you’ve spotted them anyway.
Well, I wouldn’t want to be on the end of that letter that’s for sure.
To a non legal person, your letter is so well structured. It takes the reader through each point. The points you make fully supported by evidence/law. In total contrast to , the intemperate and subjective language of Mr M. A metaphor for rational support for empirical evidence versus the irrational and emotional ideology.
I sincerely hope he does make the very reasonable apologies and reparation as you have outlined. Aside from wanting the harm to you to be stopped, harmful misinformation to be halted and the benefit For Women Scotland. The prospect of Mr M having to financially support FWS, is such “just desserts”.
Thank you for making this letter public, Sarah. I will be interested to read the response, if it is also published. It does seem reckless for a KC to have published these statements about you other than with an ironclad defence of truth or public interest to your prospective claim. Time will tell if there is such a defence or not
Those advising me will of course consider the response carefully. But Maugham has said he will instruct the Good Law Project in this matter so I am afraid I am not confident about the quality of the arguments that are coming my way.
Hi Sarah, good luck. I currently have a case filled with the court against a Liberal Democrat Cllr for sending a defamatory and grossly offensive email about myself. Same solicitor.
Maugham is obviously a self-aggrandising nitwit and seems to be very much in the wrong in your case. However, to play devil's advocate, surely you realise that there is just no possibility that he can accept the condition of a donation to For Women Scotland, even if he otherwise accepts that you are in the right. Let's imagine that the situation was reversed, and you received a pre action letter from him that convinced you that you needed to settle on the merits of his case against you. You might be minded to do just that. Then you read that he insists that you donate £5000 to a political organisation whose core values you are fundamentally opposed to. You’d likely conclude that the condition was so humilating and likely to discredit you in front of your own side that you couldn't possibly accept it. Despite my being generally sympathetic to your position on these issues I think that your pre-action letter lacks a genuine off ramp away from litigation. Of course this may be intentional.
Then he can just give the money to me and I will donate it. Of course I am being intentional. I don’t say things I don’t mean and I mean the things I say. I need to make it clear that nothing about this is about money for me. I need to clear my name and show him he cannot tell harmful lies about people he dislikes with no consequence.
Jobyin Fuckwit Magbum needs to eat humble pie more than anyone I can think of. Who, frankly, does he think he is? Telling lies about another barrister is surely beyond the pale? He seems to have some sort of messiah complex.
Couldnt edit my comment, so I deleted it.I think Jokyon should be reported. He is undoubtedly bringing the profession into disrepute. I wish I had bookmarked something I saw about a month ago. Fairly credible comments about possible lack of transparency ( I'm sure there's a pun there) about an odd these cunts he keeps taking and what he actually does with them.
The law (especially that of England) isn't my field, but my original degree was in economics and accountancy, which leads me to wonder: where are the funds coming from to give this character the confidence that his claims will be backed? For journalists out there, it comes back to the same advice: follow the money.
They are coming from thousands of vulnerable and frightened people that he stirs up with vague promises of legal action, all the time directing funds to the GLP ‘running costs’.
Great stuff, whilst a part of me wants him to settle this with you so you can put it behind you I’d really like to see you take him to the cleaners, i hope everything goes well for you,

Fingers crossed, Sarah.
Well done Sarah. Hope you can feel you’re not alone with this one. So many people support you.

Thank you - I will pass on your kind words to those who drafted it!

Good luck. Important to take a stand I think.
Thanks for this, Sarah. Excellent pre-action letter. My earlier comment seemed to disappear??
You could ask him to donate to a fox rescue centre 🤣
Have cross posted

That’s a bloody marvellous letter. I’m very much looking forward to the response.
Thankyou for standing firm against the ridiculous accusations from Mr’s Maugham and Weddell.
That was good.
Go Sarah!! ✊️Wonderful letter! 💪 ♥️

Great letter.
Shame about the typos, including 'it's' for 'its'!
I think that’s my fault - I published the penultimate final draft. All typos hopefully picked up.
Phew! :-)
All the best with this Sarah. No one should be able to get away with posting vile lies.

I also hope he does the right thing and apologises for his behaviour which he must know on some level, is wrong.
